A HUB is a central point where cargos are routed through, and SPOKES are the routes that cargo take out of the hub. Most major carriers have multiple hubs.
The purpose of the hub-and-spoke system is to save carriers money and give cargo better routing to destinations.
In hub and spoke networks, shipping lines can accept cargo destined to different feeder markets not directly served by mainline vessels.
Due to the enlargement of container vessel sizes and the infrastructure limitations in minor ports, hub and spoke networks are extensively used in the liner business.
